Hill Road Commercials: Reliability that delivers

5 Nov, 2026

From its base in Ballinaskeagh, Banbridge, Hill Road Commercials Ltd continues to go from strength to strength as one of Northern Ireland’s leading independent commercial vehicle repair specialists. Founded in 2020 by brothers Robbie and David Baird, the company has built its reputation on quality workmanship, reliability and a commitment to keeping customers’ trucks on the road.

Operating from a modern workshop just off the busy A1 corridor, Hill Road Commercials Ltd provides a comprehensive range of services for the haulage industry, including HGV servicing and maintenance, diagnostics, brake testing, PSV preparation, engine repairs, wheel alignment, fleet maintenance and emergency breakdown assistance.

The company has become particularly well known for its expertise with Volvo trucks, thanks to the extensive experience of its management team and technicians.

The business has enjoyed another impressive year of growth, with company director Robbie Baird reporting increased volumes and a steady influx of new customers.

“Last year was another bumper year. We kept on increasing on the volume of trucks we’re putting out,” he told Irish Trucker.

“This year has been great as well. Obviously, we are delighted to have welcomed a young apprentice into the team. He has settled in extremely well, showing a great attitude, strong work ethic and a genuine interest in the industry. Coming from a strong haulage background, with his father being the owner of M&G International Haulage Ltd, he already has a good understanding of the sector and we are pleased to support him as he develops his skills and experience further.”

The company currently employs eight staff and places a strong emphasis on developing the next generation of skilled commercial vehicle technicians.

“We have eight staff and took on a young apprentice last September and he’s flying with us,” Robbie explained.

“We took on Josh, who was the first apprentice here, and he’s here about four years now.”

Recognising the importance of investing in young talent, the company is already considering expanding its apprenticeship intake.

“There’s probably room for another apprentice in September time again,” said Robbie. “We’re trying to bring the young lads through and try hang on to them as well as we can.”

That commitment to investment extends far beyond staffing.

As demand for the company’s services continues to increase, Hill Road Commercials has invested heavily in its workshop facilities to ensure customers benefit from the latest equipment and technology.

“We’ve put a brand-new pit in with a brake tester and wheel alignment,” Robbie revealed.

This new investment further strengthens the company’s ability to provide a complete service offering under one roof, while improving efficiency and reducing downtime for customers.

In an industry where every hour a vehicle spends off the road impacts profitability, having access to advanced diagnostic and testing equipment can make a significant difference.

While workshop services remain the core focus of the business, Hill Road Commercials has also recently diversified into another area of the commercial vehicle sector.

“We’ve also started getting ourselves into the market of buying and selling second hand trucks. It’s something we’ve started in the last couple of weeks and we’ve bought a few 2022 Volvos, which have all been sold since, and a couple of 2019 models, with one sold and one left.”

The early signs have been encouraging, prompting the company to explore additional opportunities within the sector.

“So we’re trying to dabble in that a bit and possibly looking at rent out as well just to give us an extra bit, I suppose,” said the director.

The move represents a natural progression for a business that already has extensive knowledge of truck maintenance and vehicle condition, allowing customers to benefit from trusted expertise when purchasing quality used vehicles.

Despite the company’s continued expansion and investment, Robbie believes the key reasons behind Hill Road Commercials’ success remain remarkably simple.

“I think it’s the reliability. Obviously, three of us combined having worked in Dennisons have the experience working on Volvos,” he said.

That experience has proven invaluable in helping the company establish itself within a highly competitive marketplace. Customers know they are dealing with technicians who understand commercial vehicles inside out and who can diagnose and rectify issues quickly and efficiently.

However, expertise alone is not enough. Robbie believes the company’s focus on value and workmanship is equally important.

“Price comes into it as well and quality over quantity. The first-time repair would be a big thing of ours and making sure it’s obviously done correctly and doesn’t have to come back again,” said the Co Down man.

That philosophy of getting the job right first time has helped the company earn a loyal customer base across Northern Ireland and beyond. In an industry where reliability is everything, operators need confidence that once a truck leaves the workshop it is ready to return to work without further issues.

For Robbie, customer relationships are at the heart of everything Hill Road Commercials does.

“I don’t like to let anybody down, especially old customers and those that have been very loyal to us over the years.”

The company’s reputation continues to spread throughout the transport industry, largely through recommendations from satisfied customers.

“There’s a lot of new customers – at least one a week anyway – that have obviously heard of us some way. It’s usually word of mouth because we don’t advertise.”

That organic growth is perhaps the strongest endorsement any business can receive. In a sector where trust is earned rather than bought, recommendations from fellow operators carry enormous weight.

Looking ahead, Hill Road Commercials remains focused on steady, sustainable growth rather than rapid expansion. Maintaining the quality of service that customers have come to expect remains the top priority.

“We hope to retain all of our mechanics who are obviously treated right here,” Robbie said.

“The hopes are to keep on going at a steady basis and just keep the head down. I do see in the future that we’re probably going to outgrow here, but at the minute we are happy enough with where we are.”

With a growing customer base, ongoing investment in facilities, an expanding workforce and a reputation built on reliability and quality repairs, Hill Road Commercials is firmly established as one of the region’s most trusted names in commercial vehicle maintenance.

As the company continues to evolve and explore new opportunities, its commitment to customers remains unchanged: delivering first-class service, keeping fleets moving and ensuring every job is done right the first time.
