Approaching 30 years in business, Nixon Haulage Ltd is a one-stop shop for all your heavy haulage, crane hire and abnormal load requirements.
When it comes to heavy lifting and wide loads, Nixon Haulage leads the way. Based in Ballymore near Bandon in Co. Cork, the family-run business was established in 1997 by David Nixon and continues to go from strength to strength. Boasting an exceptional fleet of trucks, trailers, cranes and escort vehicles, Nixon Haulage prides itself on its reliability, quality service and ability to adapt to its customers’ ever-changing needs and any issues as they arise.
The state-of-the-art fleet is backed up by a top-class and highly-skilled team consisting of David, his brother Stephen and son Brandon along with Alan Goggin, Dan Joe Holland and Ronan Kelleher. Hailing from a farming background, David cut his teeth in the plant hire sector before setting up Nixon Haulage almost three decades ago.
The service provided by Nixon Haulage includes everything from permit procurement to escort and heavy load management. The Nixon team has the knowledge, experience and expertise to ensure the most secure and effective movement of abnormal and long loads is provided. While the vast majority of its work is concentrated in the Munster region, the company also offers a nationwide service.
No job is too big or too small for Nixon Haulage which has carved a niche for itself in the movement of portacabins / prefabs, boats, mobile homes, steel chemical toilets, refrigerated units, shower blocks and changing rooms. It enjoys an excellent working relationship with its clients who include Portakabin Ireland, Vision Contracting, Euroforce, Ballinphellic Engineering, Calnan Containers, Cork Containers, Gouldings, HG Construction, Bridgewater Construction and H&H Premier Construction.
“We carry out jobs that require great planning, preparation and attention to detail,” David says.
“We’ve been at this type of work for almost 30 years and are recognised as one of the leading abnormal load specialists in the country. Our customers chose us because they know we’ll get the job done in a timely, professional and, above all else, safe manner.
“Our proven ability to offer reliable, efficient and cost-effective crane hire and heavy haulage solutions is second to none. All of our drivers are fully licensed and vastly experienced at moving wide and oversized loads.”
Nixon Haulage is currently running six trucks and nine trailers along with an escort vehicle that is fully-equipped to meet the Code of Practice. There are three Volvo and three Scania trucks, with the latest addition being a 2020-reg Volvo 540 with an 86-tonne crane.
“The three Volvos all have cranes,” David explains.
“We also have a Volvo FH16 700 with a 63-tonne crane and a Volvo 420 rigid with a 53-tonne crane and drag trailer. The Scanias are all 580s.”
Most of the trailers are Faymonville and Max extendables, and include a new Faymonville TeleMAX which was purchased from Joe Mooney in Ashbourne Truck Centre. It is a fully power-steered 10.5m bed extendable to 15m featuring front lift axle, auto greaser, marker boards, twist locks and post sockets.
Faymonville is the world’s leading manufacturer of vehicles for heavy load transport and specialised transport. The Belgium brand’s semi-trailers, lowbed trailers, modular vehicles and self-propelled vehicles can be used to transport anything that is exceptionally heavy, long, wide or tall, with payloads from 15 to 25,000 tonnes… and more.
The Nixon fleet is regularly maintained and serviced to ensure there is no such thing as downtime. About 70% of the maintenance is carried out in-house, with O’Mahony Commercials in Crossbarry, Innishannon looking after the rest.
Business is good for Nixon Haulage, despite the seemingly never-ending issue of rising fuel costs.
“We’re in funny and uncertain times, but we’re busy enough. We’re lucky to have no debts hanging over us and to have a loyal customer-base. We have some fantastic customers who have stuck with us through thick and thin.
“We’re moving a lot of cabins, containers and boats. Our work isn’t just confined to wide loads. We also haul steel, building products and fertilisers. You won’t survive in this business if you’re not prepared to diversify. You can’t put all your eggs into one basket. We’re constantly investing in our fleet and have a brilliant team of drivers who never let us down.”
In summary, Nixon Haulage prides itself on its professional, dependable, trustworthy, value-for-money and unrivalled service. The long-established and highly-regarded family business would like to take this opportunity to thank its valued clients and suppliers for their continued support as well as its dedicated crew for all their hard work and expertise.
