Busy times continue at Enviro Grind Ltd
22/10/2025
First incorporated in 1997, Enviro Grind Ltd is a waste recycling company and supplier of horticultural products. Irish Trucker spoke with Chris Eves about the Donegal-based family concern, that has grown from its early origins into an expanding and successful business.
Enviro Grind was first established by Martin and Mary Eves, as a waste processing business with two employees. It now employs 40 full-time staff from its premises on the Donegal Road in Pettigo and is managed by Martin and Mary’s sons Kevin, Christopher and Corey Eves.
Enviro Grind has a wealth of experience in the waste processing and horticultural industries and has expanded in Ireland, UK, Europe, United States and Australia, and can offer its customers environmentally friendly products and efficient services.
Chris is Fleet Manager of the business and filled Irish Trucker in on all the details of Enviro Grind Ltd and its plans going forward.
“It's busy enough here right now. Obviously, you can have lulls in business throughout the year but with the nature of the recycling industry, it's always busy,” he outlined.
“The horticultural supply side of the business escalates in Spring and at any sign of good weather with increased demand for compost and garden mulches.”
He added: “We started producing compost 20 years ago when Enviro Grind became one of the first composting facilities in Ireland to receive operating approval. We process organic material such as brown bin waste, fish waste and garden/park waste to produce a rich compost material that is used by gardeners, vegetable growers and landscapers.”
The company also processes several other waste streams such as Waste Wood and MSW which are used to produces bio-fuel, and it provides a collection and delivery service as well as operating nationwide bulk haulage for third parties.
“Located in Donegal, it is key for us to be able to transport and manage our own materials - it allows us to do it as efficiently as possible while providing a high-quality service to our customers.”
Over the years the business has expanded into other sectors such as developing and manufacturing equipment for the recycling industry. In 2004 Martin designed, built and installed the first Gypsum/Plasterboard Recycling System at the Saint Gobain facility in Kingscourt, Cavan and went on to design and supply other bespoke systems in Europe and Australia.
With industry partner (Patrick O’ Toole – O’ Toole Composting Ltd), Martin established Dynamic Screening Systems in 2015 to design high-energy industrial screening machines for the quarrying and recycling sector. “We are currently starting to build a manufacturing facility on our site in Pettigo and are also building a new maintenance facility for our equipment and trucks,” he explained.
Enviro Grind’s company fleet includes 11 trucks (10 Scanias and one Volvo) and 17 trailers.
They have 13 walking floors, 3 tippers and a low loader in the trailer department with some of those just added recently, as part of the company commitment to keeping an up-to-date fleet.
“We received ownership of three new walking floor trailers from Setanta recently and we've started using automatic covers,” said the Fleet Manager. “It was a matter of health and safety. We had traditionally used manual covers but have now changed over to automatic where it can be done safely with remote control at the touch of a button.
“Two new 660s came last year from Cawleys, with new trailers, and three more 660s this year.”
He added: “We’re very happy with the 660s now, even compared to the 650s. With the new overdrive gearbox in the 660s, they are a lot easier to run compared to the 650s.”
The early part of next year is likely to see Enviro Grind making another change to its fleet as it continues to deliver its customers economic and environmentally friendly products and services.
What has been the secret to the success of this company for nearly three decades? How has a small start-up in south Donegal grown into a leading waste recycling firm and supplier of horticultural products?
For Chris, much of it comes down to the range of services and flexibility that Enviro Grind offers its customers. “We cover all areas - from the recycling right through to the haulage - it's sort of a one-stop-shop,” he said.
“We can also do it all in-house ourselves and I think that does make it easier. As there are so many of us in the business together, it means there is not one single person running it all. We each have our own areas that we specialise in but we also all work together for the greater good of the business.”
Looking towards the months ahead for the business and into next year, Chris is keen to see things staying as they currently are business-wise at least.
“Outlets for waste can be a problem – it makes the job a bit harder but with careful planning and management the business will continue to develop and strengthen,” he stated.
