Reliability, affordability and personalised service guaranteed at Kee Transport Ltd

Based along the Fintra Road in Killybegs, Co Donegal, Kee Transport Ltd specialises in heavy haulage services throughout Ireland, the UK and into Europe as well. Irish Trucker touched base with Managing Director Eunan Kee to learn all about this family-run company – from its origins to the state of business at the moment.
When Eunan Kee set-up Kee Transport Ltd a dozen years ago, he did so with the intention of one day overseeing an operation that would be renowned for its excellent reliability, affordability and personalised service.
Today, the Killybegs-based business has seven full-time staff on its books and nine trucks on the road, with 15 trailers also operating.
Eunan himself runs the company while his mother Geraldine plays the vital role of looking after the books in the office and his brother Rory serves as the head mechanic for the business. His sister Orla is also on hand as she recently obtained her HGV licence.
Eunan and Rory have followed in their late father’s footsteps by entering into the heavy haulage game and, thankfully, haven’t looked back since, as Kee Transport Ltd has grown year on year since its inception in 2012.
“Our office is in Killybegs and the company itself is established 12 years now,” Managing Director Eunan Kee outlined.
“We were going years before that with my father but he died of cancer when he was 50, so myself, my mother took it over and then my brother qualified as a heavy goods mechanic and now looks after the maintenance of the fleet.
“Geraldine is my mother and she’s in the office. My brother Rory is the main mechanic and, altogether, there are seven staff working with the company.”
Since ‘Day One’, Kee Transport Ltd has been dedicated to going the distance for clients with a blend of professionalism, friendliness and efficiency.
It’s also important to point out that the company never compromises on transport safety, ensuring that clients’ goods reach their destination securely and on time.
So, what exactly does this family-run operation specialise in?
“We’re mostly in the heavy haulage game,” Eunan explained. “We shift crushers, screeners, cabins, big generators.
“Anything heavy, wide or abnormal, we can cover it. We do customs clearances, escorting, we can organise cranage. Crane Hire Ltd down in Dublin do a lot of our work if we need them, so we can organise anything you can think of.
“It’s all Ireland, UK and we do a bit of Europe as well with work for data centres that go into the continent.”
Kee Transport Ltd began with a vision to redefine heavy haulage and, over the past 12 years, it has developed itself into having a tried and trusted name when it comes to providing on-time, cost-effective solutions for businesses in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK.
In specialising in transporting oversize, overweight and abnormal loads, the company can meet clients’ unique needs.
To that end, it’s no surprise to hear that business is thriving at the minute out along the Fintra Road in Killybegs.
“Business wasn’t too bad last year up until say mid-summer. It did slow down a wee bit then, but from Christmas it has been busy for us here,” said Eunan.
“It’s busy so far and busier than it was in January 2024. Professional drivers are scarce at the moment. We are open to give all age groups the opportunity to join our company.”
The equipment which the company uses is state-of-the-art and, on top of that, it treats its clients' equipment like it’s their own, which ensures a smooth and secure transport experience.
Last year saw the Kees adding three new lorries to the fleet in Killybegs and, as Eunan explained, he hopes to add more later this year all going well.
“We’ve nine trucks in the fleet total. Five of them are back and forth to the UK and then we’ve a couple here going around Ireland. I have 15 trailers in operation,” said the Managing Director.
“There were two new Scanias added from Cawleys (Commercials, Sligo) last year and then I added another lorry in October as well.
“For this year, I hope to secure more contacts and hopefully I’ll buy some bigger trailers. If it goes well, I’ll be calling on Cawleys again for the new 150-tonne lorries.”
So, all of that considered, the burning question is what has been the secret behind Kee Transport Ltd’s success to date?
How has a small start-up grown into what is very much now a thriving heavy haulage service that holds a golden reputation amongst clients?
For Eunan, he points to reliability and service as being key to the upwards trajectory of the business over the past decade or so.
“It’s a small business we have here and the smaller customers are my bread and butter rather than the bigger companies,” he said.
“The smaller people have helped us to get where we are today and gradually grew it to where it is now. Every time a customer rings, they’re always tended to straight away – and that goes for all of our customers – and, if you ring, there’s nearly always a lorry ready for you.”
Regular clients that place their trust in Kee Transport Ltd include the likes of Govern Heavy Haulage, Casey Agri and NI Freight, with repeat business for Eunan and co being key to the growth of the company down through the years.
As for the year ahead, Kee Transport Ltd’s MD is optimistic over further growth for the firm given the positive state of business at this point in time.
“The plan for this year is to hopefully win a few contracts that would mean that we could grow a bit more and expand the business further.
“There is a lot of work out there, so it’s a matter of growing into the heavier stuff. It just takes a plan to get into the bigger end of the heavier haulage and wider gear,” Eunan concluded.
