D Kennedy Steel Supplies goes from strength to strength

These are exciting times for D Kennedy Steel Supplies Ltd which is planning to develop a large warehouse in Enfield, Co. Meath, and continues to upgrade its impressive Scania fleet.
Serving the steel industry since 1983, the Palmerstown, Dublin 20-headquartered company caters for all your steel supplies. Founder Dan Kennedy is joined in the business by his sons Darren (transport manager) and Daniel (sales and purchasing manager) along with a 32-strong team of drivers, steel cutters, sales, yard and office staff. The family-run operation’s extensive stock range includes steel beams / bars, steel channels, steel coils, steel flats, steel angles, steel rounds, steel squares, steel tube, steel box, galve tube, sheet / plate, rebar and steel mesh. It has both the flexibility and expertise to cater for your bespoke requirements. Whether it is standard stock bars, cut to size, shot-blasted and primer painted material or a combination of all of them, D Kennedy Steel Supplies has a wide range of saws, cutting machines and facilities to meet your precise needs.
Open from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday-Friday, the company offers same-day or next-day delivery locally and prides itself on its exceptional service and friendly staff. D Kennedy Steel supplies steel to a wide range of clients in the manufacturing, industrial, farm building and construction sectors.
“We are proud to be one of Ireland’s largest independent steel stockholders, distributing thousands of tonnes per annum of stock lengths and semi-processed steel to our local and national customers,” Darren Kennedy says.
“We have been in the business for over 40 years and have built up a large client-base and a reputation that is second to none. Your business is our business and we do our utmost to offer complete customer satisfaction. No job is too big or too small.”
Cold sawing, guillotining of sheet and plate, folding capabilities, drilling, welding, fabrication, Plasma, flame, profiling, press brake, section rolling, painting, galvanising and delivery are among the services provided by D Kennedy Steel Supplies. The company has several saws which enable it to cut to exacting tolerances and in high volume. Its inhouse guillotining facilities can cut sheet and plate up to 12.5mm, while its CNC Plasma profile cutting machine can cut sheet and plate up to 80mm. In addition, D Kennedy Steel can fold material up to 6mm thick inhouse and deliver anywhere in Ireland.
“We collect the steel from the ports in Warrenpoint and Waterford and then make up the orders and distribute – usually in stock lengths – to our nationwide customer-base,” the affable transport manager explains.
“We enjoy an excellent working relationship with both ports, especially Warrenpoint where Armagh Logistics and Mourne Shipping Services are the shipping agents we deal with.”
To transport steel, you need a top-quality, robust and reliable fleet and D Kennedy Steel Supplies isn’t found wanting in this regard. Darren oversees the running of seven trucks and 14 trailers, which are predominantly Dennison flats. The all-Scania fleet of trucks consists of five tractor units and two rigids, including a 141-reg R500 which won first prize for ‘Best Scania’ at the recent Tipperary Truck Show in Dualla.
“We brought three trucks – a new 770S, a new R500 and a 21-reg S650 – to the Tipperary Truck Show and were delighted to see the R500 win for ‘Best Scania’. Donal Bolger, who drives the R500, was a Renault man through and through, but has converted to Scania. He thinks they’re a brilliant truck.
“We try to keep the fleet as fresh as possible and have two new Scanias – a tractor unit and rigid - ordered from Delaney Commercials in Naas for the New Year. We’ve always found John Delaney and his crew a pleasure to deal with. We take great pride in the appearance of our vehicles which are decked out in red. How your vehicles look says everything about your company. If they are clean and well presented, it gives a good impression.”
Darren is also full of praise for his drivers Arnold, Ross, Damien, Joey, Eamonn, Karl and the aforementioned Donal who are highly-experienced, professional, efficient and enjoy a great rapport with customers.
Operating from Palmerstown since its inception, D Kennedy Steel Supplies opened a second premises in Enfield Business Park three years ago where it has secured planning permission to build a new warehouse. Both depots are superbly located, with Palmerstown being just off the M50, and Enfield a short spin down the M4.
“We’re building a large warehouse on a five-acre in Enfield that will greatly increase our storage capacity and allow us to grow in the coming years,” Darren continues.
“We have a large customer-base which includes Broughan Engineering, Smyth Trailers, Lee Engineering, Tanco, Kelly’s of Borris, Wall Steel, Halcon, Global Engineering, Kent Stainless, F&M Whelan and ARC Engineering. Our goal is to provide the best possible service to all our clients.”
