To find out more, we travelled west to Ballina to speak with Alan Culkin.

They are also more inclined to tell others of the excellent service they received.  We rarely advertise as a lot of our work comes from word of mouth and most of our business is repeat work.

Alan has had a keen passion for trucks all his life. His father, Kevin, established the business in the early ‘80s and it was inevitable that Alan would follow in his footsteps… “Back in those early days, my father did all commercial van and truck repairs. He gradually grew the business from there,” the Mayo mechanic reflects.

“I started when I left school in the mid-90s. Myself and my brother, Brian, came on board around that time. When you are born and reared around trucks, you are always going to have a natural interest in them and I decided to follow in Kevin’s footsteps.”

Today, Kevin Culkin Commercials generates direct, full-time employment for a skilled and focussed team of eight, providing a complete range of fully-approved and certified services to fleet operators across County Mayo and beyond.

“Since we started out, the work has always been predominantly centred around trucks and commercial vans – that’s still the case today. We expanded the services as time went on to offer more services to our customers.  The reality is that vehicles do break down from time to time and to this end we also offer a 24-hour roadside assistance and recovery for commercial vehicles.

“Over the years, as our customer based increased, we recognised an opportunity to diversify our business and to this end we are now NSAI Approved Body Builders. Our workshop works with several oil companies throughout Ireland and we can offer them a one stop service for all their tanker needs.  We cover everything from tank testing preparation, bottom loading conversion and repairs, meter repairs / upgrades, remounting and refurbishment of existing equipment onto new chassis and complete new builds.”

As well as being an NSAI approved vehicle body builder, they are ISO 9001 certified for Quality Management and hold PAS 43 Certification for the safe implementation of vehicle breakdown and recovery operations. With tow trucks and service vans, Kevin Culkin Commercials are available to their customers around the clock.
