Just before 8am, at Carrigtwohill, to the east of Cork city, the series of accidents resulted in damage to ten vehicles. A number of people were also injured in the incident but none of those injuries are believed to be serious and nobody needed to be brought to hospital.

The road was closed temporarily while Gardai cleared the damaged vehicles and debris from the road and motorists were diverted via the old Waterford-Cork Road between Carrigtwohill and Dunkettle.

Chaos ensued as motorists who were already caught up in rush-hour, peak morning traffic were subjected to additional delays of up to an hour.

The exact cause of the pile-up will be investigated and both the AA and Gardai have reminded motorists that they should drive with extreme caution in foggy conditions.
