With outlets in Midleton and Blackpool, Southern Tyres is one of Cork’s leading tyre specialists.

The company’s huge selection of tyres means it has a tyre to suit every budget.

Southern Tyres opened its first depot in Midleton in 2007. This was followed by the opening of the Blackpool branch three years later. As suppliers and fitters of a wide range of tyres for all types of cars, vans, 4x4s, trucks and tractors at the most competitive prices, the company has built up a large customer-base in Cork and the surrounding counties.

Southern Tyres is headed up by two well-known local businessmen, Tim O’Mahony and Pat Whelan. The pair set up the company after Tim’s consultancy firm had carried out work for Pat’s other company, Rathcormac Tyres. As owner of one of the longest established tyre wholesalers in the country, Pat’s experience and knowledge of the business has undoubtedly contributed to the growth and success of Southern Tyres.

“Pat has a wealth of experience in the tyre sector,” explains managing director Tim, who is an accountant by profession.

“Rathcormac Tyres has been trading successfully for many years and are our main suppliers. We follow the motto of providing great prices and a wide selection of product. We also offer a 24-hour breakdown service, car and truck wheel alignment, alloy repair and puncture repair services, mini servicing, light focusing and supply batteries, bulbs and wipers.”

Southern Tyres stocks many of the leading tyre brands, including Michelin,M Michelin Recaps, Firestone and Bridgestone, as well as good quality budget brands such as Windpower, Double Star and Linglong. If, in the unlikely event of them not having a particular tyre in stock, they will gladly source it for you. The company’s fitters can also offer advice and tips on the type of tyre that best suits your needs.

“We’re one of the bigger depots in the south-west and as such we can source whatever tyre the customer requires,” continues Tim, who hails from Knocknagree near Millstreet, but is now living in Macroom.

“If we do not have a tyre in stock, we will endeavour to have it the next day or the day after direct from our warehouse which stocks over 10,000 tyres. While Rathcormac Tyres is our main supplier, we are also supplied by Philip White Tyres in Armagh and Kirkby Tyres in Dublin and Liverpool.”

Southern Tyres employs six staff between its depots in Midleton and Blackpool, and is planning to open a third outlet in the Cork area before the year is out. The staff are dedicated to serving the customer first and foremost by offering honest advice, quality workmanship and value-for-money.

The depots in Midleton and Blackpool are strategically located next door to Market Green Shopping Centre and Blackpool Retail Park. So the next time you are out shopping at either of these locations, be sure to drop by!

The opening hours at Southern Tyres are 8.30am to 6pm Monday-Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturdays in Midleton and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays in Blackpool. In addition, the Blackpool outlet remains open until 8pm on Thursdays and Fridays. All of the services mentioned are available at both depots.

Southern Tyres caters for a wide range of customers, from private car owners to haulage operators to farmers. Their 24/7 breakdown service, which is operated in conjunction with Rathcormac Tyres, is one of the most reliable and efficient around. Whatever your motoring emergencies are, their helpful and professional operatives can get you back on your way in no time at all.

The Cork-based firm recently introduced a new service of alloy straightening and repair. According to Tim, their truck wheel alignment service is unique to the Rebel County.

“Truck owners are becoming more aware of how they can save on fuel by having their wheels aligned, and we are only too happy to provide this service for them. They can get in contact with us for a quote or more information,” he says.

Of course, wheel alignment is also important from a safety point of view. The steering and suspension should always be adjusted to the manufacturer’s specification and this can only be done through measuring all wheels and having full four-wheel alignment measurement.”

Southern Tyres has clearly come a long way since 2007 and looks set to remain on an upward trajectory by offering a service which is unrivalled in Co. Cork.
“Customers, new and old, keep coming to us because of our great service,” Tim proudly declares.

“We’ve built up a reputation of being able to deliver and won’t be beaten on quality or price.”
