Heading in the right direction

CJS listen to customer feedback and their efficient team ensures that every consignment goes without a glitch.)

CJS Transport Ltd has an excellent team of drivers and the company's customers can be assured of on time delivery at a competitive price. Old fashioned hard work is the cornerstone of their approach, says director Cathal Caffrey who gave Irish Trucker an insight into the day-to-day running of the burgeoning business.

After working for various other haulage companies, Cathal Caffrey, his brother John and brother-in-law Simon Lenehan pooled their years of experience and knowledge of the haulage industry and took the brave decision to go out on their own.

That was just three years ago and although their company - CJS Transport Ltd - is still very much in its infancy, it has carved a niche for itself as a company that can trusted when it comes to meeting those all-important deadlines.

“I've been driving since I was 17 years of age and have a life time experience behind the wheel,” revealed Cathal when asked to outline the background to the setting up of the business. “The same can be said for John and Simon. We decided to take the plunge and set up our own company three years ago and it has turned out to be a case of so far, so good.”

With an up-to-date fleet of six trucks (comprised of five Renault and one MAN), at CJS Transport, their ultimate priority is providing their customers with the most efficient and reliable service to suit all transport requirements. They listen to customer feedback and their efficient team ensures that every consignment goes without a glitch.

For CJS Transport it’s all about attention to detail. They care about their customers and their focus is on providing a first class service for all our clients no matter how big or small.

By choosing them, you have selected a progressive company that is committed to the safe and timely movement of your goods. You can rest assured that they are committed to understanding the individual needs of their customers.

So, what do they specialise in? “Anything that can be pulled by truck or loaded on to a trailer!” answered Cathal. “We're very flexible in that respect.

Whatever needs to be done, we'll do it if possible. For instance, we have a bulk blower truck for transporting pellets and that is a service that differentiates us from some of our competitors.

“And if we commit to a job, it gets done. I'd be confident that all our existing customers would vouch for that. We never let anyone down and all our drivers are CPC trained. We have eight clients on the books at the minute who we work with on a continuous basis.

“We're busy, touch wood, but we've scope for more work and there is definitely potential for growth within the industry.”

There is, however, one stumbling block to CJS Transport's ambitious future plans and it's a common complaint across the haulage industry.

“The biggest problem we have is recruiting suitably qualified drivers. There's a shortage of experienced drivers in the country at this moment and I think it could bite us in the bum down the road.”

With a large number of existing drivers not long off retirement, the situation is set to deteriorate further.

“The transport industry should be pulling out all the stops to try to entice young people into driving. It's a heavily regulated industry and the cost of training drivers certainly adds up but the shortage of drivers is killing the industry.

“There is certainly an opportunity there for us to expand at the minute if we could hire more qualified drivers.”

On a more positive note, looking ahead of the future, Cathal predicts that the loyalty of their customers and their drivers will be key factors in CJS Transport Ltd's continued growth

“I would be fairly optimistic about the years ahead.

“Our customers are very loyal. The biggest thing is when we are due money we don't have to go looking for it. We're lucky in that all our customers pay on time and we don't have to go chasing money. We're paid on time, all the time and in a small business like ours that is of the utmost importance.

“The loyalty of our drivers is another thing that we are extremely grateful for. Without them, and the respect they show our customers, the company would be nothing.”
