Shanowen Plant Hire were popping the champagne corks at this year's Full of the Pipe Truck Show.

For the benefit of readers not familiar with the Full of the Pipe Truck Show, the show has been on the go for six years now and, for the last four years, it has been held in the Cavan Equestrian Centre. Participants come from far and wide and the standard of lorries on display at this year's event, which was held on the weekend of June 6th and 7th, was of the top drawer variety.

The art work, polishing, time, effort and money that is put into these trucks is a credit to owners, haulers and truck drivers. It turned out to be a weekend to remember for Paddy Patton and Shanowen Plant Hire Ltd. They walked away with no less than three awards, including the prestigious first place prize in the best rigid category.

There were also bronze medal finishes in the best artic and trailer and best light commercial categories.

“We were over the moon,” enthused Paddy when reflecting on their show success. “To be honest, we went down to Cavan with the intention of having a bit of craic over the weekend and that was our main reason for entering - but we were delighted to get the recognition. “There were lots of lads there with brand new trucks but the van I came third with was a 2006. I was chuffed with that alone. For a 10 year old to get third place, it's proof that when you put in the hard work - it pays off. The weekend surpassed all my expectations really.”

Paddy, his sister Annita, and the team at Shanowen Plant Hire Ltd have always taken great pride in the appearance and maintenance of their fleet of nine trucks and associated machinery.

Established in 1984 by Paddy's parents, Joe and Julie, the family business is based in The Ward, Dublin 11 and it currently boasts an experienced workforce of ten who are committed to providing their customers with the transport and service solution that best suits their needs.

Shanowen Plant Hire specialise in plant hire, site clearance, demolition, excavations and groundwork throughout Leinster. With a vast range of machinery including Tipper Trucks, Tracked Excavators, JCB, Mini-Excavators, Tractors and Plant attachments, they can tackle any type of job. Located just off the M50 with easy access to all areas of Dublin, Meath and Kildare, Shanowen Plant Hire have been providing large and small developers alike and the private sector with their Tipper Trucks service for over 31 years.

All of their trucks are less than three years old and are renewed on a regular basis. The trucks themselves have a Tipper Body can hold a load capacity of 9 cubic meters, can remove materials such as clay, rubble/hardcore and topsoil and they can also deliver materials such as stone, sand and topsoil.
The Patton-run operation holds a current waste collection permit for all of Ireland. They also hold a current Haulage Licence and offer a low loader service together with Skip and Grab Hire.

All drivers possess Safe Pass and appropriate licence category and drivers are also under Construction Federation Operatives Pension Scheme.
They can also meet the demand for track machines and they supply a large variety ranging from 8 ton to 22 ton. They also have a wide range of attachments, e.g. buckets, hammers and cradles, to suit excavators and it goes without saying that all excavators are supplied with experienced qualified drivers.

Meanwhile, their Case mini excavators are renewed every three years and are packed with features that give them the operating smoothness and precision equal to that found on larger excavators. Shanowen can also offer a wide range of attachments that can tackle almost any job.  And last, but by no means least, their service of providing tractors and attachments, such as water tankers and tipping/low loader trailers has proven to be extremely popular with Local Authorities.

Like everyone else involved in the construction sector, Shanowen Plant Hire wasn't immune from the negative repercussions of the economic downturn but Paddy is glad to report that they have noticed evidence of green shoots of recovery in recent times. “We're busy kept ticking over,” he revealed to Irish Trucker & Light Commercials. “Don't get me wrong there is a bit of movement again definitely and long may it last. We've a big job on in the city centre, in Smithfield, and we're pricing a lot of work with a couple of jobs to kick off.

“I'd definitely be optimistic about the future. The way things are going we'll definitely be looking at taking on a few more lads. The one thing I would say is that rates need to go up but we're keeping our head above water. We pride ourselves on our efficiency, reliability and the quality of the service we offer.”
